Dr. Julian Sernik is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and keyhole techniques for correction of foot and ankle conditions, including bunions, arthritis, and deformity. His approach emphasizes early mobilization, and most of his patients are able to bear weight immediately after surgery, supporting early rehabilitation. He also offers minimally invasive repair of Achilles tendons and advanced reconstruction techniques for chronic or missed Achilles tendon injuries.
He completed his MD at the University of British Columbia in 2007, his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Alberta in 2012, and a clinical fellowship in Trauma and Lower Extremity Reconstruction at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre at the University of Toronto, in 2013. Dr. Sernik is a clinical instructor at UBC in the Faculty of Medicine. He has completed additional training in Physician Quality Improvement and Physician Leadership and actively mentors healthcare specialists in leadership and team-based care techniques.
Outside the hospital, Dr. Sernik is passionate about the backcountry. He is a certified ski guide with the Canadian Ski Guide Association and has decades of experience in the ski industry as both a ski patroller and ski resort doctor. In the summer, he explores remote terrain on horseback, combining his love for backcountry navigation and horsemanship.
